Challenge

The competitive intensity in the construction business has led the customer to focus on developing a telehandler that could reach more than six storeys, driving significant productivity gains and, in some cases, eliminating cranes on a job site. The customer partnered with Tata Technologies for our full vehicle development and hydraulic system integration expertise.

Solution

Tata Technologies engineering teams collaborated with the OEM to develop its first Telehandler with high-reach class 5 section BOOM driven by chains and hydraulic cylinders. The engineered telehandler can lift to eight storeys, reaching a height of 23 meters.

The solution is developed leveraging engineering calculus using Mathcad, FEA validation, vehicle architecture, and hydraulic system design using Automation Studio. To accelerate product development, we engineered three prototypes for enhanced testing and validation purposes, while playing an active supporting role through the design and validation phases. In addition, our team coordinated with suppliers to meet the cost and performance objectives. For ease of serviceability, we helped them develop maintenance manuals and technical books along with electrical and hydraulic layouts. The customer sales for its new telehandler were higher by 60% than the projected numbers coupled with a product development cost reduction of 8%.
